Harnessing Creativity

Humans have an extraordinary knack for problem-solving. In times of crisis, when our environment is changing at a rapid rate, it’s critical that we step in and find ways to adjust. It’s our survival mechanism. At Brew Agency, we put creativity and problem solving on a pedestal. We love to use our imagination and generate new ideas. While to some this may seem daunting and intimidating, with the right mindset, it can be an opportunity to thrive — this is where innovation occurs.

The COVID-19 pandemic has left us with no other choice but to adapt quickly. If you’re looking to cultivate innovation and creativity in your business, here are a few steps to follow:

Step One – Focus on Others

In the current state of uncertainty, there’s no denying that our community needs help. The first step to harness your inner creativity is to shift your focus to others. If possible, remove all thoughts and concerns from your own situation, and put your energy towards figuring out how you can help someone else. This effort removes the fear of failure and allows the creative juices to start flowing. This also establishes a “need.” Discovering how you can provide a solution to someone else’s needs is critical in business innovation.

Step Two – Motivate

Creativity occurs when people feel motivated by the challenge of the work itself or when they are fulfilling an external purpose by doing the right thing for others or serving their community. Finding and then instilling purpose among your team can fuel the motivation needed to create and foster new ideas.

Step Three – Innovate

Innovation almost never starts with a blank page. Researching ideas and seeing what’s been done before will always help jumpstart creative thinking. There is a myth that ideas are pulled “out of thin air” by creative thinkers. In business, however, innovation occurs as a result of adaptation. This means taking the knowledge you have now and adapting what you’re currently offering in a new and different way.

One of the most important aspects of the creative process is action, even if your idea is not all the way developed. If you are not constantly moving the idea to a better place, you will remain stagnant. Set daily goals and track progress. Recognize that creativity is always a work in progress — and true innovators never finish their work.

Step Four – Reciprocate

During times of crisis, it’s important that we come together as a community and harness our creativity to respond and act upon the needs of those around us. Great ideas can come from anywhere — let’s remember to share our creative ideas with others!
